The reason God has given so much to you
“You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”– John Bunyan
“For it is in giving that we receive.”– St. Francis of Assisi
I will never forget the first time I came to grips with the fact that I was materially rich. Sure, as a pastor’s kid, we had much less than most of those who lived around us in Wisconsin. But on a trip to the Holy Land I experienced what my mom had always modeled: You don't determine how wealthy you are by comparing yourself to those with more, but by asking yourself, “Who has less?!”
After traveling on an Egyptian cruise liner, we spent the night in a beautiful hotel right in the middle of Cairo. I even had my own room. Big wooden doors, a massive bed, and beautiful tapestries from floor to ceiling. On the far side of the room, I pushed open a glass door and strutted out onto the second-floor balcony like a little Pharaoh. The Nile and all of Cairo stretched out in front of me.
Then, I leaned on my balcony railing, and I looked down. I met two big, huge, brown eyes of a boy the same age as me. He was in a loincloth, his ribs sticking through his skin, his face gaunt, his eyes bugged out, and flies were all over him. He was sitting on a cardboard box, alone, begging from those who walked by on the street. I backed away and sat down on my bed. How come I'm here and he's down there? God, why is it that he's on the street, and he probably won't see his twentieth birthday, and I live in so much plenty? WHY?
The Holy Spirit just whispered to me, GRACE. It’s my choice, Pete. Receive it, share it…
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”– Luke 12:48
Lord God, I thank You that there is no condemnation for those of us who are in Jesus. (Romans 8:1). So clear my mind from any fleshly feelings of guilt about the spiritual and material wealth You have entrusted to me. Just show me what You want me to do with it. Amen.
