A Question about the Resurrection

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Like the Corinthians, the Thessalonians were curious about resurrection. Their primary concern was for beloved friends, family, and others who had already died without experiencing the fulfillment of this promise. What would happen to those believers at the sound of the last trumpet?

Paul reminded them of the basis for faith in an actual resurrection: “We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him” (1 Thessalonians 4:14 NIV). What peace this truth gives believers! Though we are separated for a season from those we care about, we will be reunited someday. Our resurrection and theirs is certain.

Next, the apostle told them the order of the resurrection — the dead in Christ would be the first to receive resurrected bodies. Though loved ones will have died before the Lord’s return, they are not overlooked. When Jesus returns, they’ll have the honor of rising to meet Him in the air before those who are still alive.

Paul exhorted the Thessalonians to fix these truths in their hearts and to speak of them to one another. At the resurrection, the graves will open and every believer in Jesus will rise to meet Him. The length of time a person is deceased is no obstacle to their being raised.

Jesus proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies” (John 11:25). Ask the Father for courage to tell someone the glorious message of Easter. Death has been conquered. Heaven and a resurrected body await every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
