Using Spiritual Gifts

Ephesians 4:11-13

Any person who claims Christ as Savior has a responsibility to use his or her God-given talents and gifts for His glory. Serving the Lord is not a suggestion but a command. To maximize our success as servants, the very same Spirit who imparts our spiritual gift aids us in putting it to use.

When the motivation to reach our full potential for the Lord is mixed with the desire To use a spiritual gift, we become a powerful force in God’s kingdom. We are His workmanship, specifically created to honor Him with good works (Ephesians 2:10). What a waste if we are too lazy to discover what special ability He has bestowed upon us.

Service for God takes place with endless variety: different believers will use the various gifts in unique manners, and no one is limited to serving in a church. We can walk out into secular culture and find thousands of ways our combination of skill and gifting can be applied. Some opportunities will fit us perfectly, while others will be more suited for another servant. Our inborn talents and abilities augment the spiritual endowment and may help us find our calling. The most obvious place to begin exercising our gift is in an area that interests us.

Whatever the type of service — whether it involves sweeping floors or coaching soccer at our children’s school — the Holy Spirit will use our spiritual gift to spread the Gospel and thereby bring glory to God. But the benefits also extend to believers. The people who enjoy life most are those who are obeying the call to serve and making their life count for the Lord.
