Finding the Will of God
Discovering God's desired will is an ongoing adventure with great rewards along the way. For the journey, we have received a map we can rely on—the Bible— and our own personal guide—the Holy Spirit—to help us. God will also give us "road signs" along the way.
Circumstances. God uses different situations—even negative ones—to communicate with us. (Philippians 1:12) To understand their meaning, we must relate biblical principles to our circumstances. God will never contradict His Word, and His will always upholds it.
Counsel. Our heavenly Father may direct us through other believers. To assess what they are saying, ask yourself, Do they honor God in their attitudes and choices? Are their decisions based on the truth of Scripture? Do they offer biblical principles or their opinion to help me find God's will?
Conscience. Once our “inner alarm system” has been programmed according to scriptural principles, we can use it as a resource to determine God's plan.
Common sense. When decisions need to be made quickly, the Spirit helps us reason through which choices will honor God. (James 1:5-6)
Compulsion. Sometimes God gives us compelling desires to see certain things happen. If we see no contradiction with Scripture and the inner feeling remains strong over time, then we should move ahead.
Contentment. God will give us peace when we accept His choice for us and obey.
With your instruction book in hand, are you watching for God's "road signs"? He does not want you to miss His perfect will for your life.
