Behind The Former Iron Curtain

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations (Matthew 28:19).

Dear friends:

In the early 1990s, shortly after the fall of the Former Soviet Union, God began to miraculously swing doors wide open, and we had an incredible breakthrough in many countries, including Albania.

For example, the "JESUS" film premiered in Tirana, the capital city of Albania, in the Palace of Congresses of the Communist Party.

This was truly a miracle. Albania had been among the most closed Communist countries in the world. It is the only nation to ever declare itself officially atheistic, a "nation without God." But, on December 14, 1991, all that changed.

"JESUS" was shown in the Party Congress hall before the very leaders who had been staunch supporters of atheism!  Paul Eshleman, our Director of the Jesus Film Project, relates:

"When we arrived in Tirana, there was hardly a person who hadn't heard that this Western film about God was going to be shown in their own Albanian language. For weeks before the premiere, the national television station had been showing short clips from the film.

"As we gathered for a pre-premiere reception with government dignitaries, word came that the public square was jammed with people trying to get into the building. More than a thousand were turned away. The Ministers of Culture and Education, slated to give opening remarks, couldn't get through the crowd and we had to start the program without them.

"It was an unforgettable night!  The director of the Albanian film studio, spoke to the crowd: 'We are gathered together tonight for the first film showing ever to be held in this building.... I believe it is most significant that this building, erected as the temple of Communism, should now become the temple of Jesus.'

"After seeing the film, 510 Albanians told us they had received Christ. More than 400 wanted to study the Bible. At the end of three days, more than 1,000 expressed a desire to receive Christ.

"Tonight I talked to the President of the Parliament, who is forming an entirely new government here. I asked him if at the end of the film - he invited Christ to come into his life. He said, 'Yes, I have.'   Also in attendance, the Prime Minister, the President of Parliament, both Vice Presidents, and the leaders of the four new political parties, including the Communist Party."

Our mighty God is doing mighty things all over the world.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright
