Man's Plans And God's Plans

We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps (Proverbs 16:9, NLT).

Dear friends:

"We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps" (Proverbs 16:9, NLT).

Although there have been thousands of similar experiences, the story of one young man stands out in my mind.  The light of Christ in the lives of other new Christian students had captivated this particular young man.

He was "the big man on campus" at UCLA, and he came to me one day. He said he wanted to become a believer because he was so captivated with all the other students who were coming to Christ and seeing how their lives had been changed.  But he said, "I have plans for my life and I've been working on those plans for years, and I don't want to give them up."

I replied that the God who created, loved and died for us has plans so much better than any plans he could ever dream of or conceive himself.

It is noteworthy that he was drawn to wanting to know Christ because of what he saw in the lives of his fellow students.  This emphasizes the importance of the witness of our lives to those around us -- that it is important to "be witnesses" and not just witnessing.

On the spot, this young man finally decided to submit himself and his plans to God.  He got on his knees with me, received Christ, and he has spent his entire lifetime working with many thousands of young people.

When one of our staff members was making a decision to submit his life's plans to the Lord and to join Campus Crusade for Christ, he prayed, "Lord, you are perfect LOVE, and you only want the best for me. You are perfect WISDOM, and you know what is best for me.  And you are perfect POWER, and you are able to make it happen."  He concluded that there is no substitute for submitting one's plans to our all-loving, all-wise and all-powerful God.

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV).

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright
