One Person's Influence

Is there one person in your life to whom you can look back as having a singular, unique and profound effect upon your spiritual growth?
Many of us have fond memories of a friend or teacher who touched our lives in a special way. When I look back over the years, I fondly remember an exceptional woman -- Dr. Henrietta Mears. Dr. Mears deeply affected not only my life but that of my dear wife, Vonette. She also inspired untold thousands of other young people.
Dr. Mears was a unique individual in many ways. She was colorful, exuberant, and remarkably courageous. As the Christian education director at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California, she took a Sunday School of about 45 members and expanded it to 4,200 members within two years. She also founded Forest Home, a conference center in the San Bernardino mountains of Southern California where hundreds of thousands of people, including Dr. Billy Graham, have been touched by our Lord. She pioneered quality Sunday School materials and co-founded Gospel Light Publications, which now provides curriculum to more than 40,000 churches and missions worldwide.
She also challenged Vonette and me to commit our lives fully to the Lord Jesus. Her ministry played an important role in helping make ourselves available to God. As a result, the Lord led us to establish Campus Crusade for Christ International, now with over 550,000 full-time and associate staff in 196 countries. In other words, Dr. Mears was a vital link in God's plan that would eventually help us to help reach over 6 billion people with the message of His great love and forgiveness. This is an example of the power of one person submitted to God.
Each person can be some kind of link in the lives of other people that can have far-reaching effects beyond your wildest imaginations -- for good or for evil. As you are faithful to God's call upon your life, you can have an enormous effect for His kingdom. Only in heaven will the scope of this effect be revealed to us.
Remember: God "is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Ephesians 3:20, NIV).
