Resentful Student Becomes Great Theologian!

I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. So I live my life in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20).

Dear friends:

I'll never forget a brilliant young man whom I had the privilege of introducing to Christ.

This young man really meant business for God, and I was always challenging him to witness, to witness, to witness.  But, I never told him how to be a witness, or that his source of power was the Holy Spirit.  He grew to resent me.  Finally one day he said to me, "You've done more harm to my Christian life than anyone I have ever met.  Get off my back.  Leave me alone!"

Since then, God has overruled the harm that I did in my zeal and ignorance, and today this man is one of the most sought-after theologians of our country!

Now, of course, if I had it to do over again, I would emphasize the importance of the Holy Spirit to the young man.

On another occasion, a student said to me after one of my messages on the Holy Spirit, "Until I learned how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, I had never introduced anyone to Christ, but the very first day I appropriated the power of the Holy Spirit by faith, I led my first person to the Lord.  Since then," he said, "I have been used by God to introduce hundreds of others to Christ."

Many times I have had the privilege of going to my knees and saying to God, "My ears are not worthy to hear what I hear and my eyes are not worthy to see what I see, as I learn of many millions who are coming to the Lord through this ministry."

And I asked, "How can it be that mere human words can be used by God, that human beings can be His partners in changing the lives of men in such a supernatural way?"  The answer became clear.  When we are filled, controlled, and empowered with the Spirit, Christ will fulfill His promise to do greater things through us, because He is the one who does it, not us.

In better comprehending our inadequacy and Christ's adequacy, I understand the words of Paul, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20, NIV).

Whenever there is any fruit in our lives, it's not us but Him.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
