“Riffing” your Thoughts
By: Rick Boxx
April 26, 2012

Some call it brainstorming, but a musician friend of mine calls it “riffing.” In the jazz world it’s my understanding that there’s an underlying melody that’s frequently enhanced by musicians “riffing” their own sounds that loosely tie to the melody.

My friend, Tom, uses the term “riffing” to challenge sales people to brainstorm freely about the needs of their prospect before meeting with them. Since the goal for a salesperson is selling products or services, meetings can easily become focused on our desires, not the prospect’s. “Riffing” beforehand about their needs can change that focus.

Romans 12:10 teaches, “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

If you’re headed into an important meeting, consider “riffing” about how to honor and love those in attendance, above yourself.
