Covering Your Sin
Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and how the people were doing, and how the war prospered. And David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah departed from the king’s house, and a gift of food from the king followed him. - 2 Samuel 11:6-8
David sent for Uriah to speak with him under the pretense of how things were going with the people and on the battle field. David was trying to hide his sin. He had devised a fool proof plan to get Uriah to go home and be with his wife. In complete hypocrisy he presented the idea to him of going home. When he left, David sent a gift of food that would have followed him right to his doorstep.
Notice how we can go to great lengths in trying to cover our sins. Mankind, from the beginning, has always sought a way to cover their sins. When Adam and Eve fell into sin ... theysewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings (Genesis 3:7). In the Old Testament, God first covered man’s sin by the shedding of blood (Genesis 3:21, Hebrews 9:22). In the New Testament, our sins have been taken away completely through the blood of Christ shed on the cross (Hebrews10:4, 10).
If only people would stop trying to cover up their own sins and take, by faith, the provision God has made to take away their sins. They would not have to strive in making deceptive plans to hide sins that they do not want other people to know about.
Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
