A Mystery to Be Revealed
Dr. Randy White
“‘But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you,” (Acts 26:16–17, NASB95)
Paul previously shared his Damascus Road experience, but here he adds a new dimension. At his conversion Paul learned that he was going to be a minister of the things he had seen (the living Christ), and also “to the things in which I will appear to you.” This is the first hint we have in Paul’s life that Christ has chosen him to be the one to whom He reveals “the Mystery.”
This mystery had not been known in previous generations. In fact, those generations did not even know that they did not know the mystery! The mystery was not known by Moses, not foreseen by the prophets, and not written of by David. This mystery was “that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (Ephesians 3:6).
If you are a gentile believer, you are part of the mystery! Celebrate this new work of God, revealed to Paul, who was even told that he would receive the mystery on the very day of his conversion. It is a mystery “hidden in God” but now made known to Paul, recorded in Scripture, and has been fulfilled in us. This mystery: Christ in you, the hope of glory!
