Beware the King
Dr. Randy White
" For the Levites left their pasture lands and their property and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from serving as priests to the Lord." (2 Chronicles 11:14, NASB95)
When the ten tribes which compose Israel separated from Judah and formed the Northern Kingdom, Jeroboam became their King. Jeroboam was the first of a line of kings that ranged from bad to worse. The Northern Kingdom never had a godly king.
Immediately upon initiating the new Kingdom, one of the first acts of the new King was toward the Levites—the priestly tribe. Jeroboam took measures to “exclude them from serving as priests to the Lord.” With this political execution, the priests began to flee south toward Judah and Jerusalem.
This scenario has played itself out countless times in history. When despots desire to become more despotic, they depose the spokesmen of God. Usually in subtle ways at first, the King finds ways to soften the cries of the priests, and then silence their sermons.
In coming years, watch for government measures that are imposing upon the church and its ministers. Watch for greater tax scrutiny, connection of violent crime with sermons against sinful behavior, ridicule of ministers and their congregants, and, eventually, outright silencing and arresting those who preach the unadulterated Word of God.
Complete and total freedom of the pulpit is essential to preserving a safe and free country. Beware the King that seeks to silence the pulpit, the press, and the people.
