Word for the World devotionals from Dr. Randy White

Serving Religion
Dr. Randy White

“For we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and alter the customs which Moses handed down to us.” (Acts 6:14; NASB95)

The Jews of Jerusalem after the days of Christ (and holding true today), held to religion more than they held to God.  When Stephen came preaching Christ as the Messiah, their main concern was “this place” (the Temple) and “the customs which Moses handed down to us”.

Because their worship and devotion was misplaced to a place and a set of customs, they missed a relationship with Almighty God through Jesus Christ His Son.  Though One had been born under the Law (the customs of Moses) to redeem them from the Law, they chose to remain under the Law.  To this day, their descendents carry the yoke of an unattainable Law, while Christ came to set them free.  In praying for the peace of Jerusalem, I pray for the day when its citizens are “free indeed” because they know the Truth, who is Jesus.

While most reading these words are Christians, we still can get caught up in religion over relationship with Jesus.  Our devotion can become a place (the church building) and a set of customs (Christian traditions) rather than a daily and personal walk with Jesus our Lord.  When this happens, our “religion” is equally as burdensome as the Jewish desire to fulfill the Law—burdensome both to us and the others around us.

Be set free today from religion by submitting yourself to the One who makes you “free indeed”.  Walk, talk, and fellowship with Jesus.  Make Christ your “all-in-all,” your complete sufficiency.

In His Grace,
Dr. Randy White
