To the Praise of the Glory of His Grace
“He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:5–6, NASB95)
When the Jewish nation was chosen for adoption as sons, it was by God’s kind will and “to the praise of the glory of His grace.” Some have taken the theological position that predestination is God’s selection of some for salvation while others remain the unelect. While it is an interesting and formidable doctrine, the Biblical use of the word does not establish much ground for defense. The underlying Greek word is used only six times in the Bible, and only one of these times could it be remotely argued to be a direct reference to salvation of the soul (Romans 8:29-30). In this same passage, context undeniably says that this predestination is “for those whom He foreknew.” Who did God foreknow? Romans 11:2 clearly says that it is the nation of Israel who are the foreknown. There is absolutely no way to argue that the “foreknown” are individual believers if you insist on using Scripture as your basis of information. So, Biblically speaking, God has foreknown the nation of Israel and predestined that nation to be conformed to the image of His Son.
Why was the Jewish nation predestined both to adoption as sons and to be conformed to the image of His Son? It was all done “to the praise of the glory of His grace.” If predestination is to select only a few for salvation while leaving the masses to die helpless in sin, then His grace is not praised. If predestination is God’s selection of a nation to use as a physical display of His grace, then when we see God’s continued and expanding work among the Jew, we praise the glory of His grace.
