Listen, and Believe!
“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,” (Ephesians 1:13, NASB95)
When Paul went to Ephesus, he first went into the Synagogue. Later, with persecution from Jewish non-believers, he took his message outside the synagogue, and many came to believe, both Jews and Gentiles. The Gentiles are chiefly in mind in verse 13. Paul rejoices that they listened, and believed. This is a simple statement, yet brings great insight to the necessary ingredients for salvation.
Some have taught that only those with a special election by God can receive the Gospel. This thought is foreign to the Word of God, however. Paul says that the Gospel, with no qualifiers, is “the power of God unto salvation to those who believe” (Romans 1:16). How does one coming to this kind of belief? “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.” When the Gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, it has within it all the necessary ingredients to invite the hearers to faith in Christ. If you believe that God must do a secret work of selection in order for a person to have faith, then you must argue with Paul’s “faith comes by hearing” argument, displayed in the lives of the Ephesians who, “having heard, believed.”
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that God sent His Son to be the substitute for our sins. In His death, Jesus paid the full penalty for the sins of the world. Now, all that remains is to believe. Do you?
