“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall crush through the forehead of Moab, And tear down all the sons of Sheth. Edom shall be a possession, Seir, its enemies, also will be a possession, while Israel performs valiantly. One from Jacob shall have dominion, and will destroy the remnant from the city.” (Numbers 24:17–19, NASB95)
Balaam’s prophecy about the coming of the Messiah in the last days did not end in a beautiful pastoral scene. Rather, Balaam speaks to the King of Moab about his ultimate destruction. And not only his, but all the other enemy kings that surround the Promised Land.
It is strange how prophecy has become a “pick and choose” game among Christians today. All of them will accept that “A star shall come forth from Jacob.” A few of them will accept that Jacob means Israel. And fewer still will accept that when He comes, He will defeat Israel’s political enemies. How one can pick and choose is beyond my understanding. Numbers 24:17-19 clearly says that this will be so.
So, as for me, I choose to stand with Israel. She is guaranteed to “perform valiantly” in the day of the Messiah’s arrival. When He comes, He will “have dominion, and will destroy the remnant from the city.” This destroyed remnant is not the remnant of Israel, but the “survivors” of the Battle of Armageddon which takes place in Jerusalem at the time of the Lord’s return.
