Amaziah’s half-hearted, no-guts service!

Dr. Randy White

"He did right in the sight of the Lord, yet not with a whole heart." (2 Chronicles 25:2, NASB95)

King Amaziah took the throne of Judah upon the death of his half-hearted dad, King Joash.  Dad had started strong but finished weak.  Now, at 25 years of age, Amaziah becomes King where he remains for his long career of 29 years.

In so many things he was right.  He was “a good man” as we would say today.  But, in the end, the final evaluation echoes the word’s of John Greenleaf Whittier—

The saddest words of tongue and pen
Are these sad words—

The problem with half-hearted service is that it has no guts!  It is politically expedient, economically safe, and spiritually bland.  It looks good on the outside but is rotten on the inside.  It leaves everyone empty handed.

Wouldn’t you rather have a spiritual epitath like the Apostle Paul, who says “this one thing I do:  I PRESS ON!”  Paul was one who had nothing to lose, nothing to hide, nobody to impress.  He was whole-hearted in his devotion to the Lord, which gave him the guts to stand before the world and proclaim, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!”

"‘Yet even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping and mourning; And rend your heart and not your garments.’ Now return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness And relenting of evil." (Joel 2:12-13, NASB95)
