Humble Expertise

Dr. Randy White

This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; and he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” (Acts 18:25–26, NASB95)

Apollos was such a silver-tongued orator and so mighty at teaching the Scripture that we use the term apologetics to describe the action of defending the faith.  Apollos was knowledgeable, fervent, and accurate in his teaching.  However, this expert was also humble!

Priscilla and Aquila “explained to him the way of God more accurately.”  Apollos had failed, it appears, to understand the new dispensation of freedom from the law and the postponement of the establishment of the Kingdom of God.  Priscilla and Aquilla were able to explain this new dispensation to Apollos, who humbly took the instruction.

No matter how smart you get or how respected you become, there is likely a Priscilla and Aquilla in your path who can teach you something!  Can you be humble in your expertise so that you can receive the “more accurate” way when it is taught?

Dr. Randy White
