Newsboys Face Fallout as Record Label Ends Partnership over Michael Tait Scandal

Contemporary Christian music group the Newsboys have been dropped by their record label Capitol Christian Music Group due to allegations of sexual abuse, substance abuse, and drugging involving former lead singer Michael Tait. Current Newsboys lead singer Adam Agee, who replaced Tait following his abrupt departure in January, broke the news Sunday night at Elevate Music Festival at Highlands Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.
"As a result of all this and the things that have come out that (Tait's) done and he's confessed to, we've been dropped from our record label," Agee said. "We've had radio stations pull our music. We've been canceled by promoters and venues all over the world."
Agee, who stood alongside his three bandmates on stage, explained how God prompted the band to move forward after Tait decided to leave due to living "a double life."
"As a lot of you guys know, our former singer the last 15 years played his last show with us in November of last year," Agee said to the crowd. "In January, he came to us and confessed he'd been living a double life, and he wanted to get help..."
"We asked ourselves, you know, what's next? (We ) We prayed about it, and we all felt that God wanted us to move forward. And we felt like we still had a ministry and a mission to do," as the crowd applauded.
Despite being aware that Tait had "personal struggles," Agee shared that he and the band did not realize the full extent of Tait's wrongdoings, as recently reported by The Roys Report (TRR) and The Guardian.
"It was so shocking to us because that's not the guy we knew," said Agee, who choked up several times as he addressed the crowd. "The guy that we knew, that we've been on the road with, he was our family. He was our brother and a friend to our families, to our kids."
"It just has been devastating to us, and our families have felt like our names (have) been dragged through the mud because of all this, and it's really, really hurt our kids."
Capitol Christian Music Group (Capitol CMG), based in Nashville, Tennessee, dropped Newsboys from their website following Agee's announcement. The scandal surrounding Tait, who was alleged of drugging, drinking, and sexually abusing victims, has led to radio cancellations and fans calling for promoters to cancel the band's upcoming tour dates.
Last Saturday, the Kingdom Bound Festival near Buffalo, New York, announced that it had replaced Newsboys with Passion Music on its July 28 schedule. Meanwhile, Christian radio network K-Love announced earlier this month that it had pulled all music by Newsboys and DC Talk, which Tait co-founded, following the sexual allegations made against him.
