Forget the Duck [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
In Christ, your sin is forgiven not in part, but the whole!
Today’s Text: “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”” (Luke 7:48, ESV)
A “sinful” woman wet Jesus feet with her tears, toweled them with her hair and anointed them with costly perfume. The Pharisees were appalled that Jesus would allow a “sinful” woman to come so near him. They considered it evidence that the Nazarene couldn’t be too much of a holy man. Imagine their surprise when this “friend of sinners” declared: “Your sins are forgiven.”
“Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”” (Luke 7:47–49, ESV)
In saying those who are forgiven much, love much, but those who are forgiven little, love little, Jesusis making a startling assertion that must not be missed. Jesus is asserting that the capacity for love is inextricably linked to receiving forgiveness.
The more you know the depths of God’s forgiveness, the more you love Him. The pathway to zealous love for Christ is a profound realization of how much you’ve been forgiven. The one who knows that she has been forgiven much loves much.
Another way of putting it, beloved, is that the gospel is not about loving Jesus and then being forgiven. The pathway to abundant life is knowing yourself forgiven and therefore loving Jesus much.
And that’s the gospel!
