Drawn Out Tears

Matthew 16:21

Sudden agony that strikes like an electric shock when I thought I had the power turned off -that's tough. The long drawn out pain, on the other hand, that I know ends in death is tougher. For example my own mom had an aneurism and died in a second. It was tougher to watch my wife's mom slowly dissolve physically and mentally as we walked through her suffering with Alzheimer's. Sudden strikes or drawn out affairs, Jesus walks with us on both kinds of journeys, but it's His long march to the cross that Matthew highlights.

Right after Matthew clinches his argument that Jesus is the Messiah by having Simon Peter respond to Jesus' identity question with "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God," he presents Jesus beginning to prepare His disciples for the deadly pain that is ahead in Jerusalem.

"From that time on Jesus began to reveal to His disciples that it was sovereignly necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem, suffer many things from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and the third day arise from the dead." - Matthew 16:21

Unlike the catastrophes that I face, Jesus knew exactly what was coming at the climax of His earthly life, but He also knew the resurrection resolution. So I can trust He will walk with me this week, and that He has the strength and wisdom to get me through either the sudden shocks or the even harder drawn out tears.
