Sharing the Light

Luke 8:16-18

Wallace and I had just finished hooking up the 50lb propane tank so that Mary could actually use her gas cook top. I needed to go up in the attic to make one last check on the gas pipes we had installed and retrieve a pipe wrench we had left at our last joint. It was dark as I maneuvered through the attic, but what saved me was the LED flashlight-small enough to fit in my shirt pocket and powered by only a couple of batteries.

All I had to do was take it out, push the button, and like magic that little chip lit up my path. Now the stupidest thing I could have done while picking my way from rafter to rafter was to put a dark rag over my flashlight. In fact, once on my attic journey, I dropped my light down into a pile of insulation and dust. Immediately I couldn't see until I fished around, found it, and then let that beam shine again.

Jesus not only knew all about seeds and good soil as we learned in yesterday's Devo. He also knew all about lamplight and the need not to cloak the light.

"Now nobody lights a lamp and then covers it up with a clay vessel or places it under a bed. Instead, he places it upon a lampstand so that all who come in may see the light. In fact, there is nothing hidden that will not be made known. Everything will be made public. Therefore look carefully at how you hear. For to the one who has, more will be given, but to the one who thinks they know, it will be taken away." - Luke 8:16-18

Jesus reminds me that when it comes to sharing His Story with others, I need to think in terms of sharing my light in the dark attic we all live in until we respond to Jesus, the Light. What a privilege to let this light shine openly today.

LORD, while Greg and I were checking some things out at our old house, he hadn't seen my neighbor's son in a while, but as soon as he reconnected, he began to mention what a faithful friend You are. Then he just threw out the idea that it might be a good time for my neighbor's son to return to You. Help me to learn from Greg's example and not keep my light under wraps!

P.S. Oh yes! All the joints checked out. No propane leaking, no smell, and all of Mary's burners are working. I'm sure there's a spiritual analogy there somewhere, but I'll let you figure out your own connection. Let me know what you come up with.
