Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. – Martin Luther King Jr.
Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree one day. All of a sudden, BONK! This apple falls on his head. "Eureka! I've found it!" he exclaimed. After Newton "discovered" gravity, he developed the law of universal gravitation, which states that the force of gravity between any two spherical objects of uniform density is directly proportional to the product of their masses.
Furthermore, inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers, if m1 and m2 are the masses of two objects, and if their centers are separated by a distance (that we'll call d), then the gravitational force (which we'll call f) between them is given by the following formula: f = km1m2/d2.
Great, now that we have that out of the way, you can finally start to explore and experience gravity, right? Wrong!
Listen, even if I could perfectly explain the Trinity to you, that doesn't guarantee that you'll believe in it any more deeply. And even if we can't reduce God to a formula or understand how He works, we can still explore and experience the Trinity because we can experience the "apple hitting us on the head." We may not understand the formula that makes Him what He is, but there are important things I can know right now:
- I can know the Father's love.
- I can experience the grace of Jesus by what He did for me on the cross.
- I can fellowship with the Holy Spirit who lives in me.
Bonk! That's worth contemplating, because it can change us!
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. –2 Corinthians 3:18
Holy Spirit, I may not completely understand how You work, but I believe in the Trinity! Open the eyes of my heart. I want to contemplate You and understand more about You Open the eyes of my heart. I want to contemplate You and understand more about You so that I can become more like You. Amen.
