Surprise! Lust is a form of adultery
Pastor Mark Jeske

People like to assume that God’s ways work pretty much the same as our ways on earth. People furthermore like to assume that his governance is a lot like ours. Since our country has freedom of belief and freedom of speech, isn’t it reasonable to suppose that these two principles are operative in God’s courtroom as well? Actually, no.

Listen to Jesus: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27,28). Jesus’ statement probably drew two responses. First, “Yeah, right. I can think what I want in my own mind.” The second, “What if he’s right—dear God, I am in serious trouble.”

Yes, he was right, and yes, we are all in serious trouble with the Sixth Commandment. No excuses, no stalling, no blaming allowed. The fact is, the inward and outward holiness demanded by that holy command is beyond anyone’s ability to keep. We are all in desperate need of forgiveness, and we are in desperate need of the strength of the Holy Spirit to lead a life that respects the sexual boundaries set by our Maker. God set those boundaries not to torment us or remove what little fun we can have in this hard life. God built the excitement and fun into sexuality to enliven marriage and strengthen it as the basic building block of all society.
