December 30
God, I don’t understand your ways
Pastor Mark Jeske

Everybody knows that children chafe at adult ways. They resist growing up because of all the hard work, self-sacrifice, and chores that adulthood entails. They resent being told no. They don’t like waiting and deferring to others when their own wants seem so urgent. They just don’t understand the adult world.

Here’s an insight—the maturing process doesn’t stop at age 16. In fact, we will be in God’s school of maturation our whole lives. I don’t care how old you are—you are probably still learning service to others above self, the importance of truth over lying, the virtues of patience, and the value of listening before speaking.

If you have ever questioned the wisdom of God’s ways, you have a lot of company: “How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever? Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment” (Psalm 74:10,11). Every parent has heard the word why ten thousand times from inquisitive children. God hears it a lot too.

In time you may learn his rationale for how he is managing things in your life. But even if you don’t, you can trust his kind heart and eternal wisdom. He’s been tending his children a long time. He has your best interests at heart; he thinks big picture; he thinks long term.

It’s all good. You’ll see.
