A text for the ages
Jason Nelson

My children are irritated that I don’t have a smartphone or GPS. I tell them I have a phone on the wall that seems pretty smart and there are maps in my head. I think they’re afraid that I’m going to keel over somewhere and won’t give off any signal. I tell them I may get one, but I am waiting for the technology to improve. They shake their heads and walk away.

I know sharing a message can be a breakthrough. Like Paul Revere’s ride and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the world changed when the word got out. I pray device-savvy generations can lead us into an era of collaboration because they have instant communication with each other and access to the best information. It’s their turn to change the world. I hope they have an app for that.

The Bible is a text that changed the world. It was so commonly known that cultures parlayed on its acceptance and united around its values. Art reflected its images, language its expressions, and society its substance. Chiseled in stone or ricocheting from a micro circuit, the Word of God is a text for the ages. Every generation holds a sacred trust to pass it on.

May our children and theirs love to receive this text and respond, “It’s news I’m most proud to proclaim, this extraordinary Message of God’s powerful plan to rescue everyone who trusts him” (Romans 1:16 MSG).
