Strange agents of heaven
Pastor Mark Jeske
Christians could be forgiven for assuming that throughout the many centuries of Old Testament history the only believers in the true God were to be found within Israel. True—God did indeed lavish immense personal attention and care on that nation. But he had many other agents for his agenda, and some were even great “heathen” kings like Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and Cyrus of Persia.
And Pharaoh Necho of Egypt, who ruled in the 26th dynasty from 610 to 595 b.c. “Necho king of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah marched out to meet him in battle. But Necho sent messengers to him, saying, ‘What quarrel is there, king of Judah, between you and me? It is not you I am attacking at this time, but the house with which I am at war. God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or he will destroy you’” (2 Chronicles 35:20,21).
At that point every Sunday school kid would expect to hear that good King Josiah’s army attacked and repelled the Egyptians. In fact, Necho was right. He crushed the Judean army at Megiddo and Josiah was killed. God indeed had business for Necho at Carchemish way up north.
God is up to many things in many places. Let us not assume that we know his specific agenda; nor should we presume to tell him whom he can or can’t use to accomplish those plans.
You have the power to change your world!
The Bible tells the story of how God reformed a misshaped world through Jesus. How you see yourself fitting into that story shapes you. And as you reach out to share that story, it can’t help but shape the world around you!
