Can’t buy me love
Pastor Mark Jeske

By my totally unscientific analysis, I’d say about 50 percent of the pop songs on the radio are about love in some way—longing for love, dreaming of love, exulting in the love someone is currently experiencing, or bitterly lamenting the love someone just lost. Love is the oxygen of the human spirit. Without it we die inside. So tell me—how would you define love?

You know you are being loved when someone makes you feel important . . . when someone does something for you “just because” . . . when someone consistently remembers your birthday . . . when someone will listen to your troubles without interrupting or changing the subject . . . when someone helps you out in a major way and expects nothing in return . . . when somebody shows up to be with you when you are stressed out and down.

The greatest love of all comes from God: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). Jesus was under no obligation to do the things he did. There is only one explanation as to why the Son of God went through the agony of his betrayal, unjust trials, condemnation, rejection, physical torment, crucifixion, and burial—to give forgiveness and life to you and me. He loves us! He loves us!

And by the way, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:11).

You have the power to change your world!

The Bible tells the story of how God reformed a misshaped world through Jesus. How you see yourself fitting into that story shapes you. And as you reach out to share that story, it can’t help but shape the world around you!
