“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” – Galatians 6:4-5, NIV

When I turned down requests to volunteer more in my writers’ group, I felt guilty. My fellow writers were wonderful people, but they didn’t seem to understand why I wanted to use some of my free time outside my busy work schedule for fun adventures. Several people who had pressured me to volunteer more filled their own weekends with constant volunteer duties. But God was calling me to take time for experiences that inspired me with wonder. At first, I worried that they thought I was lazy, but I was doing all I reasonably could do. I needed free time regularly for adventures that moved me closer to God. That was just as important as volunteering. When I stopped comparing myself to busier volunteers, I found the freedom I needed to do what God – not other people – wanted me to do.

If you’ve been comparing your life to other people’s lives, you can break free of comparisons without any guilt. Galatians 6:4-5 gives you permission to stop comparing yourself to others you know and embrace the unique life God has given you. When you “test your own actions,” you’re just asking yourself if you’re being faithful with what God has given you, not whether you have as much as someone else. Your “load” – all of your responsibilities and struggles – is the unique set of circumstances God is using to shape you into who he wants you to become.

You can rely on the Holy Spirit to constantly help you with this process. By yourself, in this fallen world that’s full of messages that can break your confidence, it’s hard to stop comparing yourself to others. But the Holy Spirit wants to help you stop feeling bad about your own life in comparison to other people’s lives, and start focusing on the beautiful journey God has just for you. God created you with specific purposes that no one else can fulfill. When you ask the Holy Spirit to help you, he will give you a greater perspective on your life. That will show you more about how you matter, and how God is pleased with all the ways you’re putting his love into action day by day. Instead of seeing what you lack compared to others, you start to see the victories in your own day, like the kind words you spoke to someone who needed encouragement or the patience you showed while trying to solve a problem.

Embracing your own life with confidence involves accepting that your load is just the right size for you. God has assigned your load to you because he knows what you’re capable of through your relationship with him. When you stop worrying about how you measure up to others, you can find peace and confidence from knowing that you’re doing exactly what God asked you to do. You can embrace your own life because it’s the one God gave you to fulfill important purposes.

As you go through your day, try to catch yourself when your mind starts to drift toward comparison. When you feel like you’re not measuring up to other people, remember that you don’t have to carry the weight of everyone else’s expectations. The Holy Spirit is right there with you, ready to remind you that you are loved, seen, and valued for exactly who you are. Let go of the need to be like anyone else and choose to be fully yourself. Trust that God is working in your life in wonderful ways, and walk forward carrying your own load with peace and confidence.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,
Please help me to stop comparing my life to other people’s lives. I confess that I often spend too much time looking at what others have and how they are living, and it leaves me feeling discouraged and distracted from the life you’ve given me. Please heal that part of my heart that feels like I’m not enough. I want to stop measuring my worth by how I compare to the people around me. Please fill me with the confidence that comes from knowing I’m walking the path you designed specifically for me. Help me to enjoy the unique life you’ve given me and to be proud of all the ways I’m growing and learning today. I want to embrace my life with gratitude and trust that you’re always right there with me to give me the strength I need. Teach me to value my own journey and to live into my purpose from you. Thank you, God.
Amen.

Joining us this week is worship leader turned viral comedian Heather Land. After growing up in the shadow of her mother’s decades-long addiction, Heather reflects on how this painful season—alongside her unexpected shift from the worship stage to the world of comedy—taught her that while our paths may take unforeseen turns, our core calling to encourage and uplift others remains constant.

Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Rachel Kessler, an Episcopal priest and Kenyon College chaplain who completed her PhD in medieval studies at the University of Toronto before pivoting to seminary after hitting academic burnout, then built a following as the “Nerdy Priest” on TikTok after a student secretly downloaded the app on her phone.
