You Are a Masterpiece with a Purpose - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - September 18, 2025
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” – Ephesians 2:10, NLT.
When my children were young, I volunteered in their elementary school classrooms. My favorite part of that work was helping children with their journals. I loved seeing how they expressed themselves creatively and how proud they were of what they wrote and drew. They always seemed to especially love their artwork. Many of them exclaimed to me, “Look, it’s a masterpiece!”
Have you ever stood in a museum and looked at a famous painting or a magnificent sculpture? You might see the complex details or the powerful emotion the artist captured. A masterpiece is a work of master skills, created with passion and intention. It’s unique, priceless, and irreplaceable.
God calls you his masterpiece. You’re not a mistake or a mass-produced item on an assembly line. You’re a one-of-a-kind, custom-designed work of art, created by the Master Artist himself.
It’s so easy to forget this, isn’t it? You may scroll through social media posts and feel like your own life is boring in comparison. You may look in the mirror and see what you think are flaws. You may remember your past mistakes and failures, and worry that you’re broken, damaged, or not good enough.
But that’s not how your Heavenly Father sees you. When God looks at you, he sees his beautiful creation. God sees the person he designed with a unique personality, specific talents, and a special blend of qualities nobody else has. God loves everything about you! Your value isn’t determined by your successes, appearance, social status, or what others think of you. You are always valuable, because your Creator says you’re his masterpiece.
Also, God has renewed you through your relationship with Jesus. The stress of living in this fallen world can make you feel like a damaged work of art. Maybe life has left you feeling chipped and cracked. Maybe your choices have left stains of guilt and regret on the canvas of your heart. But God is a master of restoration. As you walk with Jesus, he makes you completely new. When you believe in Jesus, God takes your old, broken self and gives you a fresh start. He washes away the stains of the past and declares you clean. He begins healing your heart and restoring the beauty of his original design in you. So, you’re a new creation – a restored masterpiece – who God treasures.
Ephesians 2:10 also points out that God has created you with a good purpose in mind. Michelangelo didn’t sculpt David to hide him in a dark closet. God didn’t create you, his beautiful and unique masterpiece, to live a life without purpose. God has a plan for you to live according to your purpose. Before you were even born, God had good works prepared specifically for you to do. You don’t have to wander through life aimlessly, wondering what you’re supposed to do. God has already laid a path for you, filled with opportunities to use your specific gifts to show his love to the world.
These “good things” don’t have to be big projects. Often, they’re simple, everyday acts of loving faithfulness. Your good things can include the encouraging words you give to a friend or family member struggling, the integrity you display at your job, or how you use your talents for music, cooking, or organizing to bless someone else. You can do the good work God has prepared for you by simply living as the person God created you to be, right where you are, and allowing God’s love to flow through you.
So, believe what God says about you. When you look in the mirror, try to see what God sees: a beloved child, a cherished masterpiece, made new and purposeful. You’re loved and infinitely valuable. Your life matters! The Master Artist has not only created you, but has also prepared a beautiful and meaningful life for you to live.
Let’s pray:
Dear God, thank you for making me. Please forgive me for the times I’ve listened to lies that say I’m not good enough or that I’m worthless. Help me believe I’m your masterpiece, uniquely designed and completely loved by you. Thank you for making me new through Jesus, washing away my past and giving me a fresh start. Please open my eyes to see the good things you have planned for me to do today. Give me the courage to walk in your purpose and share your love. Let my life show other people your goodness and creativity at work. Thank you, God. Amen.

If you've been feeling tired, overwhelmed, depleted, or just quietly wondering where God is in the middle of a very full life — this episode is for you. And honestly? It might be for me too, because I'm recording this in one of those seasons myself.
Today we're doing something a little different. Instead of going deep in a passage, we're talking about what to do when deep feels like too much — when you need less, not more. Specifically, I'm walking you through one of my favorite practices for weary seasons: handwriting scripture.
Not typing it. Not scrolling past it. Actually writing it out, slowly, in your own hand — because something happens in your brain when you do that. The words land differently. They go deeper. And over time, they become part of that personal library of God's voice that the Holy Spirit can pull from when you need it most. That's what Psalm 119:11 means when it says I have hidden your word in my heart — it's scripture moving into your long-term memory, where it lives and stays even when you haven't opened your Bible in weeks.
I'm sharing the five verses I wrote out for myself today — and why each one hit me fresh even though I've known some of them for years. This episode is part of our How to Study the Bible Podcast, a show that brings life back to reading the Bible and helps you understand even the hardest parts of Scripture.
