A Very Sharp Sword
Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:18).
The Bible is by far the best-selling book of all time. No other book comes close in the number of copies printed, distributed, reprinted and passed down from one generation to the next.
The Bible is God's holy and inspired Word. It has been translated into thousands of different languages and dialects. There are more books written about the Bible than any other work in the history of man.
But few people realize the sheer power of the words in this amazing book.
Lila and her husband were expecting their fourth child, and were looking forward to the new baby's arrival with eager anticipation. Then, unexpectedly, their dreams were shattered by a miscarriage. Not only was Lila grieved by the loss of the child, it soon became apparent that her own life was in grave danger.
Serious complications suddenly became evident, and she was rushed by ambulance to the hospital.
Lila was only vaguely aware of her surroundings as she slipped in and out of consciousness. Her family was at her side encouraging her, and many friends and loved ones were praying fervently. During the crisis, she found it nearly impossible to focus her mind on anything except for one clear impression that persisted in her mind. "I can endure... I can survive... I can withstand... all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Somehow, in spite of the loss of blood and the close proximity of death, she was aware that she was not remembering the words just right. Yet intuitively she understood that God was promising to see her through.
Two weeks later, she returned home, weakened but alive. While reading her Bible, she suddenly remembered the exact Scripture: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13, NKJV). How she praised God for His Word, which had penetrated the fog of unconsciousness and death with a powerful promise of strength and provision!
Many forget, or have never learned, that the Bible is not just a theological book. It has a self-contained, supernatural power. The Epistle to the Hebrews records, "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (4:12, KJV).
Referred to by God Himself as a "sword," the inspired Word is a mighty weapon in the hands of the believer.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
