If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me (Jeremiah 29:13).
Thank God for what He has done in the dear people of South Korea. It is beyond anything I have ever seen in one country.
I spent one week in Seoul during the 1980 World Evangelization Crusade/Here's Life, Korea. Dr. Joon Gon Kim, our director for Korea, was chairman of the crusade. He and his staff had trained more than one million people from thousands of churches throughout South Korea in areas of strategy, discipleship and evangelism. Each of these million Christians was instructed to bring one or more non-believers to the evening meetings. Night after night, from one to three million people attended the evening meetings.
The statistics were mind-boggling. For example, at each of the first three evening meetings, I gave a salvation invitation. The fourth evening I gave an invitation to appropriate the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith. Dr. Kim and other officials reported that more than 1 million made salvation decisions and over 1.8 million appropriated the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith. In all, more than 16 million people attended all the meetings held during the five days, including five million who attended all-night prayer meetings.
To understand this remarkable response, one must be aware of two things. First, according to the officials, there was a great turnover in the crowds. Each evening, many new people attended.
Second, the Koreans have demonstrated an amazing hunger for God and who, by the hundreds of thousands, begin every day, long before dawn, in prayer. They fill the churches of South Korea and give generously of their time, talent and treasure. But as I have learned from several Korean pastors and missionaries, many Korean Christians, like American Christians, are not sure of their salvation. So, as I gave the invitation each of the four nights, the emphasis was on faith: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9, NIV). I made very clear that it is not enough to believe in the historical Jesus. We need to receive Him into our lives by faith, and on the authority of God's Word we can be assured of our salvation.
Both the great Martin Luther and John Wesley of history had a deep hunger for God, and did everything they knew to please Him, but the revelation of grace, faith and assurance of salvation did not come to them until later.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
