Young Man Greatly Used by God - May 28

Young Man Greatly Used by God

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel (Proverbs 5:1).

Dear friends:

In the early part of the 20th century, a young man was converted to Christ and earnestly began witnessing to others.  Within months of his decision to follow the Lord Jesus, he was discipling other young people to follow their newly found Savior.

Before long, the young man had gathered a small number of Christian friends, and together they went to the hills to pray.  They prayed for one another, but the focus of their prayers was their country and the world as they pleaded with God for the salvation of the lost.

Those heartfelt prayers led to the founding of the Navigators, an outstanding, worldwide ministry that has led multitudes of men and women to Christ.  The young Christian man was Dawson Trotman.  The vision and enthusiasm of Dawson Trotman strongly influenced my own desire to build disciples to help fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord in this generation.

Dawson Trotman was an ambitious man.  But unlike some of the great industrial moguls and financial wizards of his time, Dawson Trotman was motivated by godly ambition, which led him to accomplish extraordinary things for the Lord Jesus Christ instead of for himself.  He was a bright, artistic and highly articulate leader.

Sadly, in 1956, at Schroon Lake, New York, Dawson dived into the water to save a drowning girl, an act of heroism that cost him his life.  He died a young man, characteristically sacrificing himself for the sake of another.  But, in spite of his seemingly untimely death, Dawson Trotman's brief life continues to bear fruit, for he was determined to glorify God.

God's call on this one young man's life was the catalyst for an organization that currently employs 3,800 staff, ministering in over 100 nations worldwide. Dawson Trotman started reaching out to high school students back in the 1930s and later started meeting with sailors in the U.S. Navy, more students and other facets of society.  His method was individual attention to each man and a focus on Scripture memory, Bible study, and prayer

I thank God for the life and influence of Dawson Trotman, as we remember and honor him today.  He was greatly used by God to raise up a powerful ministry that has touched the lives of many millions, including my own, and is still touching lives around the world.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
