Inner Truth

Be made new in the attitude of your minds
Ephesians 4:23

Brooke never considered the books she read to be harmful. Reading Jane Austen's works or Christian romance novels seemed like a relaxing way to spend an evening.

But soon it became easy to picture herself in the scenes of the book. She started to compare men she dated to Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice (they fell short) and to take innocent scenes from novels several steps further in her mind. She began to compromise her personal standards in order to live out the relational fantasies she'd been entertaining.

Then, sitting in church one Sunday, Brooke heard the pastor say, "Speaking the truth in love begins with speaking the truth to ourselves." The first thing that came to mind was the stack of romance novels on her nightstand. She had been lying to herself about the impact they had on her life. Lust and impossible standards had affected her relationships with men. The only way to change the pattern was to be honest with herself about her destructive reading habits.

When we speak the truth to ourselves, we are doing what leads to the best, most God-honoring lives and preparing our souls to love others.

In what areas of your life might you be lying to yourself?
