Growing Together: Listen Well

Scripture
To answer before listening— that is folly and shame. The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.
Proverbs 18:13-15 NIV

Thoughts for the Day
Communication is more than talking. It is learning to listen with care. Many relationship problems grow because one or both people feel unheard, misunderstood, dismissed, or unimportant.

It is possible to hear someone’s words without truly listening to their heart. We may listen just long enough to prepare our defense. We may interrupt, correct, explain, or assume we already know what the other person means. But Scripture warns us that answering before listening is foolish.

Listening well requires humility. It means we slow down. It means we pay attention. It means we are willing to understand before we try to be understood. Good listening communicates love. It says, “You matter. Your thoughts matter. Your feelings matter. I am willing to hear you.”

In dating and marriage, good communication creates safety. It gives both people room to share dreams, fears, disappointments, needs, and hopes without fear of being attacked or ignored. When someone feels safe enough to be honest, the relationship has room to grow.

Listening well does not mean we always agree. It does not mean every request is right or every feeling is based on truth. But it does mean we honor the other person enough to hear them fully before responding.

Jesus listened to people. He asked questions. He noticed what others missed. He responded not only to words, but to the needs beneath the words. As we become more like Christ, we learn to listen with patience, compassion, and wisdom.

Consider this …
One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your full attention. Put down the phone. Stop preparing your argument. Look beyond the words and ask, “What is this person really trying to tell me?”

Healthy relationships are strengthened when both people are willing to listen with love. Listening well can soften defensiveness, lower tension, and open the door to healing.

Prayer
Father, help me become a better listener. Give me a humble heart that does not rush to answer, defend, or correct. Teach me to listen with patience, compassion, and wisdom. Help me hear what is spoken and notice what may be hidden beneath the surface. Let my communication bring understanding, peace, and grace.

In Jesus' name. . .
