Today's Scripture
"This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it."   Psalm 118:24 NLT

Thoughts for Today
One positive about singleness is that, except for single parents, most singles have more disposable time than their married friends. When you compare the single with the married lifestyle, you'll be reminded married people experience extra cares and concerns that singles do not. Only a person who has once enjoyed these freedoms as a single and has given them up can appreciate the advantages and put them in proper perspective. Most singles are not even aware that many of their married friends look upon them and their freedom with a bit of envy.

Consider this …
Here are some freedoms singles can enjoy. Some are humorous . . . some a bit more serious. They are all positives of singleness.

As a single . . .

You do not have to worry about having meals ready on time. You can get up early if you want and even make noise without worrying about disturbing your spouse. Conversely, you can stay up late, working or cleaning or reading, with upsetting your spouse's schedule. You can spend time studying and meditating on Scripture. You can work your own TV remote control. You can leave the toilet seat up (or down). You can set the heating or air-conditioning thermostat for your own comfort level. You can make decisions and carry them out. You can change jobs without upsetting a family. You can spend your money on things you choose. When you spend time with yourself, you don't have to deal with guilt about neglecting your spouse.

What other freedoms do you enjoy because you are single? Rejoice and be glad in each day!

Prayer
Father, thank you for helping me see the freedoms I have as a single. Help me focus on my blessings. In Jesus' name . . .

These thoughts were drawn from …The Single Christian: Living as One in a World of Twos by Dr. Elizabeth Holland. In a world where everyone seems to have a mate, it is difficult to live life as a single person. Whether you have never been married, are divorced or are widowed, this study is for you. In The Single Christian, Dr. Holland examines many of the different facets of singleness, from rejection; bitterness and unforgiveness; loneliness; to dating; single parenting and the positives of being single. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals.
