Today's Scripture
“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.”
James 1:14-15 NLT

Thoughts for Today
When there is sin in our life, we often don’t want to face the truth. Maybe it’s something we are doing that is wrong. Or maybe it’s something we know we should do but are refusing to do so.

We make excuses to others . . . to God . . . and even to ourselves.

“This isn’t such a bad thing to do. I know people who do a lot worse.”

“It’s really not my fault. They left me no choice.”

“God, I’d like to do what you are telling me, but I have all these other things to do.”

“That habit isn’t controlling me. I don’t need help. I could stop anytime I want.”

“It’s my parents’ fault. Look how they raised me. I didn’t have a chance.”

“I do so much good for people. Surely this one little indulgence is okay.”

Consider this . . .
We can always come up with excuses for denying the truth, but today’s scripture says the real culprit that leads to sin is our own desires. And there is no such thing as a little sin that doesn’t really count. Don’t compare your actions with what other people do to see how favorably you line up. Instead, compare them with God’s holiness and his Word. Now how well do you line up?

Is there is something in your life that shouldn’t be there? It’s not going away until you face the truth. It’s wrong--and it’s your responsibility to do something about it.

It’s time to stop making excuses . . .

Prayer
Father, I’ve been blaming everyone and everything for this sin in my life. But I’m ready to face the truth. It’s wrong. And I am responsible. From this point on, help me be honest with others, with myself, and especially with you. Please forgive me and help me make things right.
In Jesus’ name . . .

These thoughts were drawn from …Completely Free! A Group Study of Romans 1-8 by Dan Strickland. Everyone struggles from time-to-time, but we can have confidence that in Christ we are completely free from sin's slavery, from condemnation, and from fear of failure. This group study of Romans 1-8 and 12 helps Christians break out of the dull routine of a stagnant spiritual life. Applying the truths found in Romans can transform any believer into a person eager to follow God's will. This study can also serve as a powerful evangelistic tool by explaining the message of salvation as presented in Romans. Suggested uses include home Bible studies, cell groups, Sunday school classes, support groups and personal enrichment.
