“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

Thoughts for the Day

Words matter more than we often realize—especially in parenting. Long after consequences fade and rules are forgotten, words linger. A child may forget what you corrected them for, but they will remember how your words made them feel. Words spoken in frustration can quietly take root as shame or fear, while words spoken with love and intention can shape confidence, security, and hope.

Many of us carry memories of words spoken over us as children—some encouraging, others deeply painful. Without realizing it, we can repeat those same patterns. God invites us to pause and become intentional about what we say and how we say it. Correction does not have to come with condemnation. Discipline does not require harshness. Love-filled words have the power to guide without crushing.

If past words—spoken by others or by yourself—still weigh heavy, forgiveness is the starting point. God’s grace allows us to move forward and speak differently today. As we surrender our speech to Him, He teaches us to use words that build up rather than tear down.

Consider This . . .

Take a moment to reflect on the words most often spoken in your home—not just during discipline, but in everyday moments. Ask God to reveal where your words may unintentionally discourage or wound, and where He desires to bring healing. Consider how tone, timing, and intention affect how your child receives correction or encouragement. Even small changes can have a lasting impact. Today is an opportunity to partner with God in using your words to bring life, confidence, and hope into your child’s heart.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for the children You have entrusted to us. Forgive us for words spoken out of frustration or impatience. Teach us to speak with kindness, wisdom, and grace. May our words bring life, encouragement, and hope to our children and reflect Your love in our homes.

In Jesus’ name…
