Matthew 6:11

Sermon: 1692 How to Pray for Our Daily Bread, Part 2

Pray Over This

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Matthew 6:11

Ponder This

So often, I want to have enough so I don’t have to depend on God. I want to have enough money in the bank, so I don’t have to worry about it. We call that security. Is that really security? Who is more secure—the man who has a warehouse full of bread or the man whose father is a rich baker? Our Father, give us this day our daily bread.

The old trolleys would run with an arm attached to an electric wire with the power coming from that wire. The trolley was dependent on the wire for power. How does a car run? It can go independently of another power source for as long as the fuel lasts.

Many of us want to live like cars. We want to have full tanks so we can set off on our own. But God calls us to live like the trolley. I’ll always have enough if I’m connected to Him. It’s not how much I’ve got in the tank; it’s what I’m connected to. That’s the way the child of God is to live—always connected to God.

  • How can you stay connected to God? What are some ways you seek independence from God?
  • What makes it challenging to stay connected to God all the time?

Practice This

Pray and ask God to grow your connectedness to and dependence on Him.
