1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
Sermon: 1809 The Sad Case of Vanishing Values, Part 1

Pray Over This

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Ponder This

There is a lot of danger when a pastor and his congregation start to view his role as a hired hand for the church. The pastor is not the middleman between the member and God.

You have your own relationship with God. You can’t hire anybody to serve God on your behalf. You need to surrender and serve God. Your pastor is not a surrogate or a paid mercenary to serve God for you. This is a step you must take in personal faith.

You need to put your personal time in with God. You need to spend time in His Word. The Good Shepherd gave His life for the sheep. He gave His life for you so you could have a relationship with Him and walk with Him. No one else can do that for you. The Bible teaches we’re to love God and live lives devoted to Him. That is what the Word calls you to. The Word of God is not just for your pastor; it is the Word that needs to change your life as well.

  • What are some ways you have prioritized your personal relationship with Christ? How have you benefited from that?
  • What are some ways you might treat your pastor as a “hired hand”? Why is it important for you to take ownership in your relationship with Christ?
