Psalm 37:25
Sermon: 1787 Honoring Father and Mother
Pray Over This
“I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.”
Psalm 37:25
Ponder This
Even after you have your own home, you still learn the counsel of father and mother. Your parents are wise in ways that you’re not. You’ll be amazed at how much your parents know. Your parents have an advantage over you—experience. David said, “I have been young, and now am old.” You can’t say that as a young person. All you can say is, “Once I was young.” But those older than you have seen both sides of life and have had experiences you haven’t had.
Imagine you were taking a trip from the East Coast to the West Coast, and your parents started out a day or two ahead of you. So, often they call back to give you instructions. They know where you’re staying and the way you are traveling, so they report, “Don’t take route 60. They’re tearing the thing up. There’s a blockade, and you’ll spend hours there. We spent all kinds of wasted time there because of construction.” And they recommend certain restaurants they enjoyed along the way. That doesn’t mean they’re smarter than you are. They have just been further down the road. We do well to listen to godly wisdom from those who are further down the road.
- When have you had a tough time listening to the wisdom of those with more life experience than you? What happened? What made it difficult to listen to them?
- Who are some people ahead of you that you can learn from? What are some things you can seek to learn from them?
Practice This
Ask advice from someone ahead of you and share some of God’s wisdom with someone in the generation after you.
