Dry Eyes in a Weeping World - Love Worth Finding - September 3
September 3, 2025 – Dry Eyes in a Weeping World
Sermon: 1655 Turning Tears into Telescopes, Part 1
Pray Over This
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Ponder This
Jesus was a man of sorrows. One of the most poignant verses in all the Bible is “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). Do the things that break the heart of Jesus break yours? Blessed are they who mourn. Are we a dry-eyed church in a hell-bent world? One of the things we have learned not to do is to mourn.
So many of our church services are filled with cheerleader enthusiasm. I'm not speaking against joy. The Bible says there's a time to laugh and there is a time to weep. The best thing you can say about mourners is that they have the sensitivity to feel. Their hearts are touched.
We've done all we can to keep ourselves from feeling any pain. We have psychologists who will numb our neurosis. We have our doctors to sedate our pain. We have insurance agents to take away our worries. And even at death we have the mortuary to somehow try and beautify death for us. On top of that, we want to go from one entertainment to another. The word amuse means not to think. We want to be amused through life instead of mourning the brokenness in the world. But this is not the way of Jesus.
- What are some things you have mourned? Are those things also things Jesus would mourn?
- What are some things you do to cope with the pain of the world? What makes it hard for you to mourn?
Practice This
Make a list of challenging things happening in the world and in your life. Grieve them and bring them before God.
