The power of Christ’s pain for you
March 29, 2013
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of traveling all over the world for ministry. And in many of the places I’ve visited, I’ve seen some amazing old churches. Often, there is a large crucifix at the front surrounded by candles and people praying solemnly. But as I was in one of these churches awhile back, it hit me: This isn’t how Christ died.
The portraits and sculptures you see of Christ dying on the cross in no way grasp the shame and the blame that He took when He died in agony. Jesus didn’t die in a quiet church; He died on city streets surrounded by the cursing of men. He died shamefully and painfully, and He did that for you and me.
The pure Son of God… stripped down to take our shame and our sin cried out, “My God, My God! Why have you forsaken Me?” It was as though Jesus was suspended between heaven and earth… rejected by men and judged by God for our sin – not His.
No art can do justice to the suffering of our Lord. In fact, even if we were to crucify someone today, it wouldn’t compare with Christ bearing the sins of the world on the cross of Calvary. Thank Jesus today for His willingness to go through unimaginable pain for your reward!
THANK JESUS TODAY FOR HIS WILLINGNESS TO SUFFER IMMENSELY TO GIVE YOU AN ETERNAL REWARD.
