God’s Providential Path

Then Jesse said to his son David, “Take now for your brothers an ephah of this dried grain and these ten loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp. And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and bring back news of them.” Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
1 Samuel 17:17-19

David was a humble shepherd boy, the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons, when God chose him to be the next King of Israel. Jesse asked David to bring his brothers food at the camp of Israel. They were in Saul’s army. Then, when David returned to his father, he could give him detailed news about his brothers.

Notice, the Lord was in control of the situation. He had providentially guided David’s life so that he would be in the right place at the right time to do God’s will.  Listen, if David had murmured and complained about his father’s request to bring food to his brothers, he would have missed out on God’s will and what the Lord intended to do. David willingly obeyed his father, and in doing so, he would get the chance to view the frontlines of the battlefield.

Some Christians lose out on what God intended to do for them because of their murmuring and complaining. They miss out on the blessings of God. We need to learn to be faithful in the little things––like David who took care of his father’s sheep. Then God can entrust us with the bigger things. God will be faithful to guide us as He works out His providential path for our lives. Proverbs 16:9reveals to us: A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.

In your daily plans, why not ask God to help direct your steps?

To believe that our Heavenly Father constantly spreads around us providential circumstances that work for our present good and our everlasting well-being brings to the soul a veritable benediction.
