Shocked to Death

Now Abigail went to Nabal, and there he was, holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk; therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until morning light. So it was, in the morning, when the wine had gone from Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became like a stone. Then it happened, after about ten days, that the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.
1 Samuel 25:36-38

As Nabal was rich, he held a great feast, like a king! Abigail went home to a foolish, drunken husband. She told him nothing until the next morning when he was over his drunkenness. When Abigail informed Nabal about David’s intent to attack the household and about her acts of intercession, he was shocked. He had a heart attack and went into a coma! His heart became hard as a stone. Days later, God struck Nabal and he died.

There is so much to digest in the story of Nabal, Abigail and David. One thing stands out clearly––husbands, do not become like Nabal. Understand, God removes men like Nabal; He will not put up with them. He removes them out of His sight.

There are so many times when husbands believe they have things under control in their marriages, and yet, many times their wives are suffering. Why? Husbands are not spending time with them or are paying them little or no attention. When a wife leaves a husband for another man, they are shocked. They wonder why it happened.

When a husband goes back to look at the fruit of his ways in his marriage, he may find he never did anything special for his wife. He never communicated with her. A wife will just get tired of how she is being treated. She may become tempted and deceived into another relationship––it happens all the time. We need to be careful how we live our lives as husbands––we need to be like Christ.

In Christian marriage, love is not an option. It is a duty.
