Power and Person

Genesis 1:1-2 (NIV®)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

We have a tendency in organized religion to diminish the work of the Holy Spirit. It’s clear from the beginning to the end of the Bible that the power of God and the person of the Holy Spirit are almost synonymous. The Holy Spirit was present for the creative power of God to give shape and order to the world. The Holy Spirit delivered the Israelites from their enemies—sometimes whole armies of enemies. The Holy Spirit enabled Elijah to outrun the chariots of Ahab. The Holy Spirit came upon the prophets and they foretold what God would do. When Mary asked the angel how she would give birth to the Son of God, the angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (Luke 1). Throughout Scripture the Holy Spirit is the person through whom the power of God is made evident in people’s lives. We will not flourish as Christ-followers apart from the Holy Spirit, so we should be intentional about welcoming Him into our lives.

Heavenly Father, I offer myself as a living sacrifice, yielded to you. I want to know Your power in my life. I choose to cooperate with the Person and work of the Holy Spirit so that I can fulfill the purposes You have for me in the earth. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
