A Prayer for God's Comfort When You Miss A Loved One

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18

There are days when missing someone feels like a physical ache in your chest. Maybe it's a parent who's no longer here to give advice, a spouse whose empty chair at the dinner table still catches you off guard, or a child whose laughter you'd give anything to hear one more time. Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and neither does the deep longing for the people we love.

I know this feeling intimately. I've lost my mother, my father, and my precious daughter. There are moments when the missing feels so overwhelming that it takes your breath away. It might be triggered by a song on the radio, a familiar scent, or even just the way the light hits the room at a certain time of day. Suddenly, you're right back in that place of wishing you could pick up the phone and call them or wrap them in one more hug.

Sometimes people try to comfort us with phrases like "they're in a better place" or "at least they're not suffering anymore." While those things might be true, they don't always touch the deep ache of simply wanting our loved one back with us. The truth is, it's okay to miss them. It's okay to feel sad. It's okay to wish things were different.

Here's what I've learned through my own journey of loss: God doesn't rush our grief or tell us to get over it. In Psalm 34:18, we're reminded that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." He doesn't stay at a distance when we're hurting. He draws near. He sits with us in our sadness.

Missing someone is actually a beautiful testament to love. It means that person mattered deeply to you. It means they left an imprint on your heart that will always be there. God understands this kind of love because He created us for relationship and connection.

When the missing feels overwhelming, I've found comfort in remembering that the love we shared with our loved ones doesn't end with death. That love is eternal, and it's a gift from God that no one can take away. While we can't create new memories with them here on earth, we can carry their love with us and let it shape how we love others.

Let's Pray:

Heavenly Father,
Today we come to You with hearts that are heavy with missing someone we love. You know exactly who we're thinking of and how much this person meant to us. You understand the depth of our longing and the ache that comes with their absence. Lord, we ask for Your comfort to surround us like a warm embrace. When the missing feels too heavy to bear, remind us that You are close to the brokenhearted. Help us feel Your presence in our sadness and know that we don't have to carry this pain alone.

Thank You for the gift of love that we shared with our loved one. Help us treasure the memories we have and find comfort in knowing that the love we shared is eternal. When we're tempted to focus only on what we've lost, help us also see what we've gained by having them in our lives. Give us strength for the hard days and peace for the sleepless nights. Help us find ways to honor their memory and carry their love forward. And when the time is right, help us find joy again without feeling guilty about it. We trust that You have our loved one safely in Your care, and we find hope in knowing that this separation is not forever.
In Jesus' name, amen.

Thank you for praying with me today. If you're missing someone special, I want you to know that your grief is valid and your love is beautiful. God sees every tear and understands every ache. He's with you in this journey, and He's holding both you and your loved one close to His heart.
