A Prayer to Overcome Apathy
By Whitney Hopler

Bible Reading
“But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’” - Ephesians 5:13-14, NIV

Listen or Read Below:

Are you struggling with staying motivated enough to do everything you have to do? Sometimes, too much stress or too much frustration or discouragement in this fallen world can leave you burned out. In that state of mind, it can be hard to care about what God wants you to care about. You may still go through the motions of daily life. Maybe you can even complete most of your responsibilities and keep moving forward even when you feel apathetic. But it’s exhausting to lose your enthusiasm for life. Both your mental health and your relationship with God can suffer when you’re struggling with apathy.

The Bible describes apathy as a spiritual sleep. It urges you to wake up from that sleep as if rising from the dead. Then it promises that “Christ will shine on you.” God doesn’t intend for you to live in a kind of spiritual sleepiness, where you’re alive but not fully aware of the life God wants you to enjoy.

God designed and created your body, mind, and spirit to be connected. All those important parts of you need rest and care regularly for you to be well. God’s invitation in Ephesians 5:13-14 isn’t meant to shame you. Through these words, God is gently calling you back into the light of Christ, where you can start to recover.

This Bible passage points out that light makes things visible. When light enters a dark room, it reveals what you couldn’t see physically before. In the same way, the light of Christ helps you see what’s happening spiritually in your life. Sometimes that light shows you areas where you’ve grown spiritually tired. Other times, it reveals habits that drain your energy or thinking patterns that weigh down your mind. Instead of leaving you in darkness, Christ’s light offers something better: renewal and revival. The call to “wake up” is really an invitation to step back into that light.

You can start waking up with just small steps. By caring for your physical and mental health in simple ways – like getting the rest you need or spending time outside in nature – you can make progress toward recovery. At the same time, you can take small steps closer to God and ask him to help you overcome apathy. You may try a new prayer and meditation habit to see if you enjoy it, or start reading the Bible again every day in a manageable way, such as just one verse a day.

God will meet you where you are and help you keep walking toward the healing you need. You just need to reach out for help and rely on the guidance and strength that God will send you.

The more you let Christ’s light shine into your life, the more you’ll experience how light can overcome darkness in this world. Over time, Christ’s light will restore your energy and motivation. You’ll feel less apathetic and start to care more about what matters most. Your thoughts will become clearer, and your sense of purpose will start to return. Step by step, the light of Christ will reach every part of your life. Then you can thrive in every way – spiritually, mentally, and physically.

All you have to do to start your healing process is reach out to God for help. He is ready to meet you where you are and gently guide you back into the light. So, wake up, rise, and let Christ’s light shine on you again.

Let’s Pray

Dear God, you know how much I’ve struggled with apathy lately. I feel tired from dealing with all the challenges I face in this fallen world. So much information is coming at me all the time that I feel overwhelmed, too. After a while, I’ve gotten burned out from all the stress. I just don’t care anymore about what you want me to care about. Please forgive me for the times when I’ve let myself settle for apathy and neglect, living my life to the fullest, as you want me to. I need your help to answer your call to wake up and step into your light. Please shine your light into every part of me – my spirit, mind, and body. Help me care for my well-being, so I can heal and grow stronger. Help me grow closer to you, so I can see what matters most and be motivated to care about what you care about. Restore my passion for knowing you and walking closely with you each day. As your light fills my life again, renew my energy and motivation, and guide me forward with hope. Thank you; amen.
