From ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ to Following Jesus: Singer Mike Posner Gets Baptized
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Mike Posner announced that he was baptized one year after he converted to Christianity.
Posner, who is well-known for his hit songs, such as “Cooler Than Me” and “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” shared a video of his baptism in a lengthy Instagram post on Wednesday, in which he elaborated on “a series of Christ-based synchronistic events” that led him to turn to Christ, The Christian Post reported.
"A year ago, I got down on my knees and gave my life to Christ," Posner wrote in a post on Instagram.
Posner went on to mention several events that ultimately led him to decide to get baptized. One of which was a friend "prophesying in Christ” about his life, without having any prior knowledge of it. Another involved Posner, who experienced what he described as "electricity" shooting up his spine during a small church service, leaving him with "a deep feeling of Oneness.”
"I interpreted [these] signs as signals for me to take a step towards Christ," he wrote. "I did so."
"The veracity of these events and whether they could be pure happenstance versus 'signs' from God is not that interesting to me," he wrote. "What is interesting is what happened afterwards."
Posner adds that after he decided to commit his life to Christ, he began reading heavily. The New Testament, along with works by Christian thinkers such as C.S. Lewis and Mother Teresa, was among the works he began studying and reading.
Despite all his study and reading, the singer admits he struggled to understand what it actually meant to be a Christian.
"Some of the doctrine I heard espoused in church felt true to me, and some didn't," he wrote.
While he may have been confused and overwhelmed at first, Posner kept at it. He learned, he mentions in the social media post, that being a Christian means keeping Christ at the center of your life and attempting to imitate Him.
"For ME; To be a Christian means to aspire with all your mind, body, and soul to live as Christ did," he wrote. "To forgive all other people. To treat ALL other people, especially the least among us ... with an impossible level of compassion, grace, and most of all LOVE."
Additionally, following Christ means "LOVE CHRIST BY LOVING PEOPLE" and striving toward "an impossibly high standard of goodness towards others," in which one needs God's help.
"It means listening to the little voice inside me (that I believe comes from God) that tells me to do [the] right thing, even when I don't feel like it," he wrote. "For me, if it isn't causing me to LOVE MORE PEOPLE MORE FULLY, it isn't God."
Posner’s extended Instagram post, in which he recounts his spiritual journey, ends with a video of his baptism. After coming up from being dunked under the water, Posner stands up, slowly turns away from the camera and simply raises his hands toward the sky.
"Christ has not made my life or my heart smaller, but much, much bigger. I'm working on developing more and more of a personal relationship with God."
"Do I think that my job as an aging pop star qualifies me to tell you what to believe? I do not," he wrote. "But to not share this would feel inauthentic and like I was hiding a part of myself from my audience and I am not hiding this part of my life. But I am proud of this part of my life."
Posner's conversion to Christianity also resulted in him changing the lyrics to his most recognizable hit song: “I Took A Pill In Ibiza.” In an Instagram post, marking the 10th anniversary of the song’s release, he noted that “none” of the lyrics apply to his life anymore as he has grown in his faith.
The original lyrics of the song are as follows:
"I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool/ And when I finally got sober, felt 10 years older/ But f--- it, it was something to do."
Posner wrote new lyrics to the song earlier this year. Instead of the opening line “I took a pill in Ibiza," it is now"I went back to Ibiza," and later lyrics stating being "10 years sober," moving away from Los Angeles to start a family and deciding to "give my life up to God."
In a post earlier this year, Posner encouraged followers of Christ to always keep trusting and looking toward the future.
"U never know what God has in store for you. And HE does have something in store for you," Posner wrote.
