Trump Announces Israeli Agreement to 60-Day Ceasefire in Gaza

President Donald Trump has announced that Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen.
“My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60-Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War,” Trump wrote, saying the Qataris and Egyptians would deliver the final proposal.
“I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE,” he said.
A Turning Point in a Deadly Conflict
The ceasefire agreement is seen as a potential turning point in the ongoing conflict, which has left over 56,000 dead in the Palestinian territory, Associated Press reported.
Netanyahu Signals Willingness to Deal
Earlier Tuesday, Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is ready to come to an agreement.
“He wants to,” Trump said of Netanyahu as he spoke to reporters during his visit to a new immigration detention facility in Florida. “I think we’ll have a deal next week.”
Hamas Weighs Ceasefire Proposals
Meanwhile, Hamas is reviewing new ceasefire proposals from mediators, with the goal of complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an end to the war. According to Hamas official Taher al-Nunu, the militant group was “ready and serious regarding reaching an agreement,” AP reports.
Hamas is also willing to release all the hostages in exchange for the full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war in Gaza. Israel, however, refused the offer and suggested that it would end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms, and goes into exile, something that the group refuses to do.
According to AP, about 50 hostages remain captive in Gaza, but less than half are believed to be alive.
Netanyahu Reaffirms Stance against Hamas
Following Trump’s announcement, Netanyahu called for the elimination of Hamas on Wednesday. The Israeli Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit Washington, D.C. next week to discuss a trade deal. The discussion is expected to touch on Iran after Trump brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Iran last week.
